News Year 10 students visit the Johanneum School in Hamburg 19.04.2024

During the Easter holidays, Year 10 German students flew to Hamburg to visit their exchange partners at the Gelehrtenschule des Johanneums, our partner school in this beautiful and historic city.

Alongside students from Latymer Upper, the group experienced daily life in a German family and in the German school system and enjoyed comparing the differences to their own here in London and at Godolphin. They made the most of every opportunity to experience the culture, hone their linguistic skills and demonstrate their resilience in unfamiliar surroundings – something a textbook just can’t replicate!

Each day they headed out on exciting trips to local attractions such as the planetarium; the city of Lübeck, home of delicious almond marzipan, and the Schanzenviertel, where they learned about the important history of this working district, similar to London’s Shoreditch, which saw the creation of important companies such as Montblanc and Steinway.

In the evenings and over the weekend, students spent time with their host families, enjoying the local attractions such as the Miniatur Wunderland, home of the world’s largest model railway; the Hamburg Dungeons; and taking part in new experiences such as ballroom dancing and hip-hop classes.

The students had a lovely time and the German department looks forward to our return next year.
