On Tuesday morning, Year 9 students heard Dr Abigail Graham on her academic journey as a classicist. An ancient historian and epigrapher, Dr Graham had many fascinating insights into the ancient world and how the past resonates with the present.
The girls enjoyed hearing about the links between ancient and modern languages and were intrigued by Romans immortalising their pets with tombstones. Year 9 classicists have been studying and creating ‘curse tablets’ in their lessons, so Dr Graham’s explanation of the connection between a gold ring and the curse tablet recording its theft was very well received – especially as that ring may have been the inspiration for J R R Tolkien’s infamous ring.
The session ended with a presentation for the best curse tablets – bescu berebescu!
