News Year 9 Gothic Literature Trip to Highgate Cemetery 06.03.2026

On Thursday 5 March the English department took Year 9 on a trip to Highgate Cemetery as part of the work they have been doing in English lessons this term on gothic literature. Having travelled to Highgate by tube, we were fortunate with the weather and were able to have a very pleasant picnic in Waterlow Park. This was followed by a reflective walk around the Cemetery, with students enjoying creative writing activities inspired by the uniquely gothic atmosphere. All groups also received a tour of the famous Catacombs, further enriching their sense of the connections between the singularity of place and the gothic aesthetic.

It was a fantastic trip for Year 9 who came away from the day with a deepened sense of the meanings and feelings associated with the gothic. We look forward to seeing how they develop this understanding and take inspiration from the visit in their own creative writing tasks that they will be tackling over the coming weeks.
