News Year 7 Explore Ancient Greek and Roman Antiquities in Cambridge 23.05.2025
Year 7 set out bright and early on a Thursday morning in May for the Classics department’s annual trip to Cambridge for a day that proved to be both educational and enjoyable.
At the Cast Gallery in the University Classics Faculty, they had the opportunity to view around 450 copies of ancient originals, taking them on a chronological journey through a thousand years of Greek and Roman sculptural history. The girls engaged with such enthusiasm and focus, examining changes in artistic techniques, depiction of emotion, and a huge variety in subject material.
At the Fitzwilliam Museum, they explored the Antiquities Gallery, which showcases a vast array of Greek and Roman artefacts—from sarcophagi to drinking vessels, and ornamental animals to funerary inscriptions. The girls considered how these cultures influenced the Mediterranean world today, through their communities, myths, and art.
Despite the grey skies, some groups had a picnic while others had lunch at at the Fitzwilliam Museum. All groups took a walk around the city of Cambridge, enjoying the opportunity to see several of the university college buildings along the way and admire the punting on the river, and – of course – the chance to sample some local treats!
