News Top Marks and Triumphs for our Maths Students 03.12.2025
There was some splendid news from our Maths department at the end of November.
Fifteen girls took part in the Senior Mathematical Kangaroo Competition with a Gold certificate for Martha, Upper Sixth, which places her in the top 10% for the paper. There were Silver certificates for Susanna and Maya, Upper Sixth, and Amelie, Lower Sixth, and Bronze for Ysabel and Kyra, Upper Sixth, and Luis, Grace, Mariella and Lilly in the Lower Sixth.
A team of four Sixth Formers – Martha and Bea, Upper Sixth, and Amelie and Mariella, Lower Sixth – then travelled to Notting Hill and Ealing High School for the Senior Team Maths Challenge. It was the first time this competition has been held since the pandemic, and twenty schools competed. The team did really well scoring full marks in the first two rounds and running neck and neck with a few other schools at the top of the leader board. A mistake in the final question in the final round meant that the girls had thought they had blown it! However, they had held on to finish in joint first place with the boys from Harrow School and Rugby School – narrowly fending off teams from Latymer Upper and the Imperial College Maths School. This fantastic result means that our team will travel to Manchester in February for the national finals where over 50 schools will compete.
In not quite so nail-biting news (!) at the beginning of December sixty-nine students travelled to Soho to attend Maths Inspiration Live. They listened to various lectures about combining maths with real-world applications such as statistics, engineering and juggling. It was a good set of speakers and the girls really enjoyed the day. No doubt the day will prove useful in shaping the girls’ thoughts about the further study in maths-related fields and possible careers in the future.
