News Sixth Form Art and Design Workshops 05.11.2025
During the half-term break, our Sixth Form IB and A Level artists immersed themselves in a series of inspiring Art and Design workshops. Under the guidance of a master craftsman, students learned the art of professional sign writing and developed sculptural skills to create a variety of typefaces. This hands-on experience encouraged them to reflect on the power of the written word in visual art, prompting thoughtful exploration and the development of their own creative ideas.
Adding to the excitement, students took part in a mudlarking expedition along the north bank of the Millennium Bridge—an early start in waterproofs that was well worth it! Guided by an archaeologist, they uncovered and identified remarkable historical artefacts, from 400-year-old ceramics and roof tiles discarded during the Great Fire of London to 18th-century clay pipes. The experience gave students a tangible connection to history and a deeper appreciation for how found objects can serve as powerful metaphors in their artistic work.
Back in the studio, department staff led a series of specialist workshops in photography, printmaking, and expressive drawing. These sessions not only enriched students’ portfolios but also provided valuable material for US art and design folio submissions and architecture and art school applications.
