News Lower Sixth Geographers’ Field Trip to the Lake District 15.05.2025

In May the Lower Sixth Geography students travelled to the Lake District for a weekend of fieldwork. The Lake District in the spring sunshine is a delight and the girls took full advantage of the weather by spending most of the weekend outside. The fieldwork involved investigating glacial landforms in an effort to understand the legacy of successive ice ages in the northern Lakes.

Saturday saw a hike up to Easedale tarn, investigating landforms such as roche moutonnée and striations on the way (we also spent time researching Grasmere’s ice cream and gingerbread shop). On Sunday, A Level geographers headed down the Borrowdale Valley; usually the wettest valley in the UK, but on Sunday bone dry. Wainwright claimed the valley is the most beautiful spot in the Lake District, and it was hard to disagree with that on the day. Girls visited the enigmatic Bowder Stone, a huge boulder whose origins, glacial erratic or rockfall, remain debated. Meanwhile, the IB group carried out measurements along the delightfully named Glenderaterra Beck.

The next task for them all is to write up one of these investigations as coursework.
