News Independent Living Skills: Upper Sixth Prepare for Life Beyond Godolphin 22.01.2026

This week, the Upper Sixth had the first of three Independent Living Skills sessions. These sessions aimed to equip students with some experience before heading off to live away from home, focusing on DIY skills, cooking and budgeting, and personal care. In the DIY session, students learned to change a light bulb and later picked up hammers and nails and learned to hang a picture frame. Students in the cooking skills sessions were taught how to meal prep on a budget and had a live demonstration of how to use a microwave to create some very quick but equally healthy meals. The third group were taught the basics of laundry, learning that there’s a bit more thinking involved than simply throwing everything into the washing machine at once!

The Independent living skills carousel fits into the Sixth Form Personal Development Curriculum, which runs throughout the two years of the Sixth Form, and focuses on Self, Society, and World. The curriculum is in full swing already this term, with the Lower Sixth currently attending sessions such as understanding payslips and financial literacy, job interviews, and the importance of doubt and debate. The students regularly feedback to the Sixth Form team about what we can usefully incorporate into this curriculum; we hope that this supports with the transition into the big wide world!
