News Holocaust Memorial Day Assembly 27.01.2025

We are very grateful to Upper Sixth students and members of the Jewish Society, Leah and Galia, for leading an extremely thought-provoking and poignant Holocaust Memorial Day assembly. They explained that this year is particularly significant as it marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Leah and Galia explained how the Holocaust was an attempt by the Nazis and their collaborators to murder the Jewish people and other minority groups in Europe during World War II. They talked about the terrible living conditions in the concentration camps and how, by the time the Holocaust ended and Europe was liberated, 6 million Jewish men, women and children had been murdered. They also shone a light on the plight of over 8000 Muslims who were killed as a result of the Bosnian Genocide.

Leah and Galia talked about the theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day which is ‘For a Better Future’ and the hope that the day is an opportunity for us to learn both from and about the past, and take actions to make a better future for all. They encouraged our community to call out antisemitism and hatred whenever we might encounter it.

The assembly ended with a minute’s silence for us to remember all victims of the Holocaust and genocides.
