News Cultural Celebrations Assembly: Understanding Ramadan and Eid 19.03.2026
On Wednesday, Upper Sixth students Ealaf and Unaiza spoke to Middle School students about the Muslim month of Ramadan and festival of Eid al-Fitr, as part of our series of Cultural Celebrations Assemblies.
Unaiza and Ealaf outlined the ways in which Muslims observe the fast during Ramadan, and how fasting can allow Muslims to devote themselves to their faith and to reflect on self-discipline and the suffering of those in need. Students were interested to hear about how the dates of Ramadan and Eid are determined by the lunar calendar, and how this impacts the duration of the fast for Muslims in the UK depending on the length of daylight hours. They also spoke about the significance of prayer and charitable giving during Ramadan, and how these relate to the pillars of Islam and the origins of the faith.
Ealaf and Unaiza then spoke about the ways in which Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, as well as explaining the meaning behind other major festivals such as Eid al-Adha, which marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, and the Shia festival of Eid al-Ghadir. In a particularly insightful section of an already highly engaging assembly, Unaiza and Ealaf spoke about how some interpretations and practices vary between the different branches of Islam, and how this has impacted their own personal experiences.
Ealaf and Unaiza finished their presentation by encouraging students to wish their Muslim friends “Eid Mubarak” as they celebrate the festival this week!
The assembly was highly informative and well-presented, and the Middle School team are particularly grateful to Ealaf and Unaiza for putting such thought and care into their presentation to Middle School students.
