News Inside the Newsroom with Deputy News Editor, Sunday Times, and Political Correspondent, The Telegraph 28.04.2026
On Monday 27 April, we were delighted to welcome Lizzie Roberts, Deputy News Editor at The Sunday Times, and Amy Gibbons, Political Correspondent at The Telegraph to Godolphin.
Speaking to students interested in careers in journalism, they offered invaluable insights into breaking into the industry, securing exclusive stories, and navigating the fast-paced world of political reporting. Lizzie reflected on her previous role covering health during the pandemic at The Telegraph, emphasising the importance of developing expertise in a specific ‘patch’ and mastering the finer details of complex policy areas. Amy shared her own career journey, from local journalism to the Times Educational Supplement where she reported on the impact of Covid on schools, before moving to Westminster as a political correspondent for The Telegraph.
The event was open to all students with an interest in media, and particularly to those involved in student journalism through The G&L Times and other school publications. Lizzie and Amy also led an engaging workshop on pitching stories, helping students understand how an initial idea can develop into a front-page ‘splash’. There was lively discussion throughout, with students asking thoughtful questions about newsroom life and the skills required to succeed as a journalist. Lizzie offered a fascinating glimpse into how a newspaper is shaped over the course of a day, coordinating with reporters to respond to breaking news.
Amy, recently named Young Political Correspondent of the Year by the Chartered Institute of Journalists in 2026, spoke about her current work covering major political developments such as the Starmer/Mandelson Affair, giving our politically engaged Sixth Form students a valuable, first-hand perspective on contemporary reporting.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our students, and we are very grateful to Ms Lough for organising such an inspiring event.
