News Opening Doors: Languages at University and in the World of Work 21.11.2025
On Thursday, our Year 11 and Upper Sixth girls enjoyed a talk from three external speakers on ‘Languages in the World of Work’. The speakers explored their language journeys from school, through to university and beyond. Each offered a different perspective on how languages have helped them grow not only as individuals, but also professionally. The students were given an insight into how studying a language at University, whether as degree in itself, or as part of a joint honours, can open up a world of opportunity.
The speakers delved into the different countries in which they studied and worked in as part of their year abroad and the wealth of experience and fulfilment that this can bring. Furthermore, the girls were shown the importance of languages in fostering a real sense of connection in a business context, in an ever more globalized world. Examples were drawn from the sectors of technology, international development and sport – whether this be interviewing a recipient of humanitarian aid in South America, to managing the Analytics team for TikTok across Europe and in the Middle East. We hope that the students found the talk useful and that some will be inspired to take up a language at university, one way or another!
