News Chemistry in Action: Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists 12.11.2025

Our Lower Sixth Chemists had a fantastic day at the Chemistry in Action lecture series, enjoying a range of engaging talks from researchers at the forefront of modern Chemistry. The event offered an exciting opportunity for students to see how the science they study in the classroom connects to real-world discoveries and challenges.

One of the most captivating sessions was delivered by Dr Tim Gregory, a nuclear scientist working in a lab at Sellafield. The students found his talk particularly inspiring, as it explored Chemistry beyond the classroom and discussed how nuclear science could play a vital role in helping us achieve net zero, develop new cancer treatments, and even help us explore outer space! His passion and enthusiasm for the subject were infectious, and we’ll certainly be asking our Librarian, Mr Benton, to order a copy of his book for our future budding chemists!

Another highlight was a panel discussion featuring three early-career scientists, who shared their diverse journeys into Chemistry and their passion for scientific discovery.

The day concluded with an insightful lecture from Dr Alex Baker, who tackled the pressing issue of antibiotic resistance, posing thought-provoking questions like ‘What do we do when the drugs stop working?’ His talk allowed the students to think creatively about ways to solve this problem.

Overall, both students and teachers had a fun, stimulating, and informative day and, of course, let’s not forget the delight of the students when they had 30 minutes at lunch to dash off to the catering venue of their choice!
