News Upper Sixth Historians Travel by Eurostar to Paris 30.10.2025

Our Upper Sixth History students rounded off the first half of the Autumn Term with an inspiring trip to Paris, delving into two of the city’s most remarkable museums, both directly linked to their A Level and IB studies of 17th to 19th century France.

After an early start at London St Pancras, students boarded the Eurostar and arrived in the French capital ready to immerse themselves in its rich past. Their first stop was the Musée Carnavalet, the Museum of the History of Paris, located in two elegant mansions in the heart of the Marais district. Here, students explored the story of Paris from prehistoric times to the modern day, with a special focus on the French Revolution. Highlights included artifacts from the Bastille prison, personal items belonging to Marie Antoinette, intricate 3D city models, and period paintings that brought the turbulent era vividly to life.

The second visit took them to the Musée de l’Armée, housed in the grand Hôtel national des Invalides—one of the most prestigious landmarks in Paris. The museum boasts one of the world’s largest collections of military art and history, providing a fascinating insight into France’s evolution through war and empire. A particular highlight was visiting the Dôme des Invalides, where students viewed the awe-inspiring tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte, a striking reminder of the man whose reign reshaped Europe.

After a day steeped in history, the group enjoyed some well-earned leisure time wandering the cobbled streets of the Marais, taking in its atmosphere and indulging in a few Parisian treats—including, of course, macarons.

The trip offered students not only an invaluable academic experience but also a chance to connect with the living history of Paris – a city that continues to inspire historians across generations.
