There was reason to celebrate this week as two Godolphin debating squads, one from Year 7 and one from Year 8, saw success in the online Debating for Everyone competition on Tuesday evening.
Year 7 and 8 squads faced the challenges of two ‘short prep’ debates. Short prep is particularly challenging as debaters are asked to prepare their arguments, without any assistance or access to the internet, in just fifteen minutes. Most of the Year 7 squad were new to debating, so this was a particularly challenging task to do unaided. Nayeon, Lottie and Amaya performed brilliantly, especially in the second debate, where they opposed the motion, ‘This House would ban children under 16 from using social media’. They showed fantastic listening skills with some great rebuttal and points of information.
Our Year 8s dominated the competition and came away triumphant, having decisively won both their debates. There were three speakers in each debate, but we could pick from a squad, so congratulations go to Melody, Annabel, Karishma, Myra and Alice for their sterling performance.
