News Sixth Form Online Debating Competition 12.11.2020

On Wednesday evening Godolphin and Latymer hosted an online debating competition for Sixth Formers. Students from eight different schools took part, including one school from Barcelona and one from Los Angeles. The first motion was the highly topical ‘This house would make it illegal to refuse to take a proven vaccine for Covid-19’; the second looked at the climate crisis, with ‘This house would tax meat’.

Godolphin students Ruby and Dilia came second out of sixteen teams, and qualified for the final on Wednesday 2 December. Godolphin’s Head of English and Debating Mr Bell commented, ‘It is so exciting to hear debaters from all round the world interacting with each other; Covid restrictions have turned out to be a blessing in disguise in prompting us to make full use of the opportunities online debating affords’.

Maddie Curtis, a teacher at Sacred Heart High School, said, ‘Our students really enjoyed it and were amazed by the standard!’ Godolphin student Dilia said, ‘This was a remarkable opportunity to compete at such a high standard, against a wide range of competitive international teams. Thank you to Mr Bell for organising the competition and making it possible’.
