News Godolphin and Latymer Model United Nations Conference 2024 27.06.2024

For the first time in five years, the G&L Model United Nations Society hosted a MUN conference. We attended two conferences earlier in the year and organised a bilateral conference with Lady Margaret School, but this was our largest undertaking of the year.

The conference was organised by two Lower Sixth students, Noor and Nika, who made almost all the arrangements, including building a dedicated website and setting up the rooms in advance. The conference got off to a positive start, with an inspiring online talk from Rome by Yasmina Bouziane, a senior UN representative at the Food and Agriculture Organisation who shared her experiences in conflict zones.

There were six committees, attended by representatives from seven schools and, with judicious selection of interesting and engaging resolutions and effective chairing each session, provided opportunities for active participation from all the delegates.  As the Lower Sixth and Year 11 are out of school at this time of year, most of the students were from Year 10 and the Lower Sixth, many of whom had limited experience of MUN. In an environment that enabled participants to build confidence, an atmosphere of intense concentration and enjoyment built throughout the day which led to a deeply satisfying experience, with the accompanying teachers commenting that it had been an excellent day. The outstanding food from the school caterers also contributed.

The conference ended on time with the students leaving feeling rewarded and, in some cases, even elated. It was a great way to end the school year.
