News Durham Schools Debating Competition 28.03.2024

Last weekend, Godolphin debaters rounded off the term by participating in the Durham Schools Debating Competition.

Durham Schools is the world’s largest residential school-level competition, and we entered two teams. Despite a less than optimal start, the teams performed admirably and came close to breaking into the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, finishing at 19th and 24th out of 84 teams, they did not secure another Final berth, but they gained valuable debating experience. Antara, one of the new Captains, deserves a special mention for her excellent speaker points. We extend special thanks to Mrs Palmer for accompanying the students.

Over 100 students participate in debates at Godolphin every week, with many attending weekend and evening events, as well as the House competition. This marked the final competition for Deborah Halifax, Godolphin’s Head of Debating, who remarked, ‘As I move away from Godolphin, I know I leave behind an astute, resilient, and articulate Debating Society.’

We express our gratitude to Miss Halifax for her dedicated support of students with a passion for debating.
