News Year 11 Art and Design Visit to The British Museum 06.11.2026

On Thursday 5 November, a group of 47 Year 11 Art students went on an educational visit to the British Museum. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to enrich their coursework portfolios, extending their understanding and exploration of the theme ‘Objects as Symbols’ through direct engagement with an exceptional collection of historical and cultural artefacts housed within one of London’s most distinguished museums.

A particular highlight of the visit was the temporary exhibition Korea, an expansive and compelling exploration of Korean cultural heritage, showcasing over 2,000 years of artistic innovation, creativity and craftsmanship. The exhibition offered students an invaluable insight into the evolution of Korean art and design, providing a wealth of visual and conceptual references to inform their own creative practice. It also encouraged them to consider the relationship between cultural identity, material objects and symbolism, making meaningful connections with the Korean cultural influences they encounter within London’s diverse contemporary landscape.

In addition, students were able to explore selected galleries within the museum’s permanent collection, which offers an extraordinary breadth of artefacts spanning numerous civilisations and historical periods. These collections provided further opportunities to investigate the significance, function, and symbolism of objects across different cultures and contexts, broadening students’ perspectives and offering rich sources of inspiration for the development of their individual projects.

The students were exemplary in their conduct and approach throughout the visit. They engaged with the carefully planned activities with enthusiasm, focus and intellectual curiosity, demonstrating a genuine appreciation of the opportunities afforded by the experience. Their positive engagement reflected the value of learning beyond the classroom and the important role that first-hand encounters with art, objects and cultural heritage can play in informing and enriching their creative development.
