News Year 8 Spanish Students Explore the Sights of Salamanca and Segovia 12.06.2025

The Summer Term Year 8 trip to Salamanca and Segovia was an unforgettable blend of language learning, cultural immersion, and fun. Mornings were dedicated to engaging Spanish lessons where the girls reinforced their language skills through interactive activities such as singing, role plays, and games. These sessions not only boosted their confidence in speaking Spanish but also fostered a genuine enjoyment for the language.

Afternoons were packed with exciting cultural experiences. In Salamanca, the group visited the historic University and wandered through the city’s beautiful streets, discovering its rich history and architecture. Evening strolls in the stunning Plaza Mayor became a favourite moment for many, especially when enjoyed with an ice cream in hand. The girls also visited the tranquil Calixto and Melibea gardens and climbed to the top of the Cathedral, where they were rewarded with breath-taking panoramic views of the city. And if that wasn’t enough, they also took part in a lively salsa dancing lesson and a cultural gymkhana in Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor — two fun and energetic activities that encouraged teamwork, creativity and confidence in using Spanish.

One of the highlights of the week was the visit to Finca Valverde on Wednesday. There, the girls were given a fascinating insight into the cultural importance of the corrida de toros in Spain. Far from a simple spectacle, bullfighting was presented as a historic tradition deeply tied to Spanish identity and regional pride. The girls learned about the symbolism behind the movements, the role of the torero, and how the practice has sparked passionate debate within modern Spain. They had the rare opportunity to try on a real torero costume and step into the shoes of a matador — a moment that brought history to life in a powerful and memorable way. The visit ended with a feast of authentic paella, served outdoors in true Spanish style.

The final day was spent in the stunning city of Segovia, where the majestic Alcázar transported the girls back to life at court. It was the perfect ending to a week full of learning, discovery and unforgettable memories
