News Upper Sixth Biologists Visit Kew Gardens 30.09.2026

On Friday, our Upper Sixth Biology students visited Kew Gardens to carry out ecological sampling fieldwork. Kew Gardens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning over 300 acres and housing over 50,000 living plants.

Our students worked in groups, using quadrats to investigate and compare the biodiversity of two different areas within the gardens, before using their data to calculate Simpson’s Diversity Index. They explored how a range of factors, such as light, temperature, soil quality and humidity can cause differences in plant growth.

They worked extremely well throughout the session, collecting their data efficiently and applying their knowledge in a real-world setting. We were also very lucky with the lovely weather, making it a particularly enjoyable opportunity to take Biology beyond the classroom and spend some time outdoors.
