News ‘The Tempest’ at the Theatre Royal 24.01.2025
As Storm Éowyn swept across the UK, Upper Sixth A Level English Literature students experienced a storm of another kind on Wednesday evening, attending Jamie Lloyd’s captivating production of The Tempest at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
It was an inventive interpretation of the play, exploiting the opportunities for creative staging and bringing out implicit dimensions of the language and characterisation. The use of an all-female cast, and the transformation of Prospero from father to mother in Sigourney Weaver’s portrayal in particular allowed the production to explore female power and a maternal bond between Prospero and Miranda.
As a set text on Godolphin students’ A Level course this year, the production undoubtedly opened up new avenues of interpretation, characterisation and staging, and was enjoyed by all.
