News Race Across the Chilterns: Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh 07.05.2026
At the beginning of May, Year 9 students set out on their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) practice expedition in the beautiful Chilterns where they developed their route planning, map reading, teamwork and camping skills including putting up tents, outdoor cooking and completing a planned route carrying full expedition kit.
On day one, students walked with an instructor, learning navigation skills and how to safely cross difficult roads. They showed excellent teamwork and resilience throughout the expedition, working together to carry equipment, pitch tents, and prepare meals at camp. On the second day, students were given greater independence to apply the skills learned on day one, navigating their way from checkpoint to checkpoint with increased confidence. The experience provided valuable preparation for their qualifying expedition, and staff were impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, cooperation, and growing independence.
