News Politics Society Talk: Simon Lemieux 31.01.2025
The Politics Society was delighted to welcome US politics author and teacher Simon Lemieux, who spoke to the group about the 2024 US election.
Simon explored the reasons why the election could be thought of as ‘exceptional’ for example the lack of primaries on both sides, and the swing to Trump amongst black and Hispanic men. Simon also spoke on the role of Elon Musk, swing states and the increased significance of the TV debates.
Students followed up on Simon’s talk with a series of wide-ranging questions; whether Harris was doomed to lose due to the briefness of her campaign, the significance of campaign finance and the future of the Democrat party amongst many others.
We left with a deepened understanding of the social and economic dynamics behind the election result, and A Level students particularly were pleased to meet the author of their textbook in person! Thank you very much to Simon for coming to speak to the Politics Society.
