On 29 June, pupils in Year 9, Year 10 and Lower Sixth attended an informative careers talk by practising dentist Dr Nirali Patel, who shared an engaging insight into the profession and the many opportunities it offers.
Dr Patel began by explaining what dentistry involves, highlighting its focus on promoting oral health, preventing and treating dental disease, and improving patients’ overall wellbeing. She then outlined the varied role of a dentist, from diagnosing and treating patients to providing advice on oral hygiene and working alongside other healthcare professionals.
Giving pupils a glimpse into a typical working day, Dr Patel described how dentists balance clinical work, patient care and administrative responsibilities. She also discussed the rewards of a career in dentistry, including the opportunity to make a positive difference to patients’ lives, job security and the chance for continual professional development. Alongside these benefits, she spoke honestly about the challenges of the profession, such as the length of training, the physical demands of the job and supporting anxious patients.
The talk also explored the pathway into dentistry, covering GCSE and A-level subject choices, applying to dental school, practical training and professional registration. Dr Patel emphasised the importance of developing key skills such as communication, empathy, manual dexterity, attention to detail and problem-solving.
Pupils also learned about the wide range of career options available within dentistry, including specialist fields such as orthodontics, oral surgery and paediatric dentistry. Dr Patel encouraged those interested in the profession to gain relevant work experience, shadow practising dentists and take advantage of extracurricular opportunities to strengthen their understanding of the field.
The session concluded with Dr Patel reflecting on her own career journey, sharing both the highlights and challenges she has experienced. Her presentation provided pupils with a valuable understanding of the profession, while offering practical advice and inspiration to those considering a future career in dentistry.
