News Cultural Celebration Assembly: Rosh Hashanah 16.09.2026

On Wednesday, Year 11 students Bibi, Una and Helena presented an engaging assembly to Middle School students on the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah and their own festive traditions.

This year, Rosh Hashanah was celebrated from Friday 11 – Sunday 13 September. Bibi, Una and Helena explained that Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar year and the beginning of a ten-day period, concluding with Yom Kippur. They explained that this period offers a moment for reflection and introspection. They emphasised the importance of family gatherings during this time, around the dinner table and at the synagogue.

Bibi, Una and Helena detailed a range of their own traditions, including spending time with extended family, attending special prayer services and sounding the shofar (ram’s horn). They included pictures of their own festive meals and spoke about the importance of symbolic foods such as round challah (symbolising the year as a continuous cycle), apples and honey (symbolising a sweet year ahead) and pomegranates (symbolising abundance).
