News Alex’s Art Exhibition Fundraiser for Island of Symi 06.02.2025

Many congratulations to Alex, Lower Sixth, who organised an exhibition of her artworks at the end of January to raise money to support families on the island of Symi, Greece, which is facing a declining birth rate and collapse in its population. On a recent visit to the island, Alex met with the island’s Mayor to discuss the problem and ideas for how she could help.

Alex explains, ‘I was surprised to hear that there are no nurseries on the island, which poses a difficult problem for families with young children. A grandparent’s help is not always a given, which leaves mothers without any time to work, educate or find time for themselves. Although it may sound like a basic necessity, having a nursery on the island could have a huge impact on the lives of women, providing them with the reassurance they deserve when it comes to starting a family. With the help of the Mayor of Symi, we found a building that could be refurbished to house a nursery, where women would be able to start a family without the stress of day care.

‘By organising an art exhibition in London, I managed to raise the funds needed for the nursery refurbishment. I was fortunate enough to exhibit 43 pieces, consisting of a variety of mediums and techniques, such as oil on canvas, ink and bleach, pencil on paper, watercolour and collages. My favourite medium was probably ink and bleach, as it’s such a fluid and expressive way of painting, and a unique technique that we don’t often see being used a lot in the art world.

‘I never could have imagined such overwhelming support and interest in the cause and my artwork. This summer I plan to visit the island of Symi to oversee the progress of the nursery refurbishment, and hope for it to be ready in the fall!’

Everyone at Godolphin wishes Alex the best of luck with the project and we are all really proud of her initiative and commitment to such a brilliant cause.
