News From Fintech to Healthtech: Software in the Age of AI: Online Talk with Serkan Kutan 09.10.2026

On Thursday 8 October, we welcomed Serkan Kutan, a technology expert whose career has included Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Zocdoc, and Zelis, and who has previously served as the CTO of Amwell, to give an inspiring online talk about his career journey and the future of software engineering to the excited computer scientists, software engineers, and aspiring healthcare/fintech professionals at our school.  

Students were fascinated to hear about what these sectors are looking for in terms of skills, especially now that AI plays such a key role in technical jobs. Serkan emphasised the importance a growth mindset to fulfil the the vision of being able to build and create products, and the students learned that in the growing age of AI, it is important to be able to “speak” AI and direct it to make better and bigger things faster. 

He also talked through whether a large company or a start-up is the better career choice, and though the answer boiled down to there being no right answer, students were able to grasp a much better understanding of the advantages of both. From start-up environments that provide better opportunities for the builder mindset where you improve and evolve much quicker through building, failing, and iterating more often, to large companies which are generally able to provide better resources for you to build, Serkan inspired everyone to think for themselves and to remember that it is most important to maximise your learning and stretch yourself no matter what environment you are in.

Ending the talk with some advice, Serkan urged our student to have the confidence to be open, flexible, and constantly learning, especially in the current ever-changing world, and to be the person who is able to fluently use the advancements and the technology, and particularly AI, to their advantage rather than treating them as something to be wary of.
