News Politics and International Relations Society: Andrew Makower, OBE 07.10.2026
Andrew Makower. OBE, brother of Mary (Min) Makower, former Godolphin student who sadly passed away in 1979 when she was just 16-years-old, visited the Politics and International Relations Society this week to reflect on his 40 years working in Parliament. In particular, he discussed his role in the House of Lords, where he ended his career as Clerk of Procedural Practice. In an interactive discussion, Andrew shared many insightful reflections about Parliament, particularly exploring the huge changes during his time working there. Andrew also gave us some insights into the possible future of the Lords, explaining the proposal of the Brown Commission to create an Assembly of the Nations and Regions. We also looked at a photograph album Andrew had put together of Parliament during COVID, considering the extraordinary impact of the pandemic on our democracy. As A Level Politics students frequently debate issues around the House of Lords, it was wonderful for them to be able to quiz someone who had an extremely intricate knowledge of the institution and the debates around its future.
Thank you so much for Andrew for giving up his time to help us understand more about Parliament.
