News Choral Evensong at The Charterhouse Chapel 09.10.2025

On Monday 6 October, the Junior Chamber Choir sang Choral Evensong in the historic surroundings of The Charterhouse Chapel, part of a complex dating back to the 14th century just outside the City of London.

The service featured Preces and Responses by Sarah MacDonald, Psalm 47, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in D by Sumsion, and the anthem For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter. Their singing was both mature and expressive.

A particular highlight of the day was the visit from celebrated composer Sarah MacDonald, who attended the choir’s rehearsal and led a masterclass on her Preces & Responses. As Fellow and Director of Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and President of The Royal College of Organists, Sarah MacDonald’s presence was a great opportunity for the students, and the choir responded with great enthusiasm, and musicality.

The service concluded with one of our organ students, Giselle, who gave a superb performance of Prélude en ut Majeur by Massenet, rounding off the service with real flair, and receiving warm appreciation from all in attendance.
