News Ancient World Breakfast Club Celebrates Twenty Years 05.09.2025
On Thursday evening a special Ancient World Breakfast Club (AWBC) anniversary dinner was held, to mark 20 years since the club – then known as the ‘Ancient Greek Breakfast Club’ – was founded in September 2005. Among the 100 guests was the founder of the AWBC, Jenny Gibbon, former Head of Classics at Godolphin who retired in 2009. We also welcomed back other former members of the Classics staff, as well as two Old Dolphins who attended their first meetings when they were Sixth Form students many years ago. A speech of welcome was given by Mr Renshaw, the current club co-ordinator, who spoke about the more recent history of the AWBC. He welcomed the eight current students who attended the dinner, who represented the very many Dolphins who have attended AWBC meetings on a Friday morning over the years.
After dinner speeches were then given by Margaret Borton, a past parent and founder member of the AWBC, who reflected on the small beginnings and early years of the Club, and Professor Costas Panayotakis of Glasgow University, who has been a visiting speaker on five past occasions. He commented that on each occasion there was a keen and knowledgeable audience of members, and on how much he always enjoyed his visits. The event also included a fascinating exhibition of photos and memorabilia from the past 20 years. Here’s to another 20 years of the AWBC!
