On Wednesday, the whole of Year 9 travelled to the Globe Theatre to take part in a theatre tour and drama workshop.
Delivered by a specialist from the Globe Theatre, the session focused on the relationship between Shakespeare’s language and performance to deepen students’ critical understanding. Students learnt some fascinating facts about how different the conditions for theatres were in Shakespeare’s day (did you know that more people could fit in the theatre because everyone was smaller?), and worked closely on a passage from The Merchant of Venice, learning about how actors can convey who is the most powerful character in any particular scene.
The tour around the theatre really brought to life how audiences would have experienced the theatre in Shakespeare’s time; they were a lot more raucous and rowdy than we are now!
