Year 8 Classicists Visit Fishbourne Roman Palace

Posted: 21/06/19

On Tuesday the Year 8s visited Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex with the Classics Department.

This former residence of King Cogidubnus, a principal character in their Latin textbook, boasts an exquisite selection of mosaics including the famous Cupid and the Dolphin as well as well-laid out gardens.  After touring the site and learning about the excavation project, the girls’ skills of deduction and analysis were put to the test in the artefact-handling workshop where objects such as oyster shells, potsherds, and animal bones were on display.

With rain precluding a picnic lunch outside, the girls were able to dine on their sandwiches in style in amongst the mosaics of this well-preserved 1st century AD home.
