School Ethos & The Travel Plan
“Thinking globally, acting locally…” The Kyoto Protocol. The core aims which relate strongly to the issues raised in the travel plan:
- To provide a stimulating and enjoyable learning and working environment, and to foster intellectual curiosity and independence.
- To strive for academic excellence, and to develop the full aesthetic, intellectual and physical potential of each girl, recognising each student's individuality.
- To develop girls' self-respect and self-confidence, and qualities of adaptability, self-reliance, independence and sound judgement.
- To offer a broad and balanced curriculum; to provide appropriate education concerning personal, ethical and social issues; to provide opportunities for extra-curricular activities.
- To enable girls to work with others both within the school and the wider community, and to develop awareness of the world around them; to encourage them to take part in activities both for personal enjoyment and to serve the community.
- To prepare girls for higher education and employment, and to equip them to become responsible adults and active citizens.
- To foster concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment.
The Travel Plan links to our school ethos in the following ways:
- By fostering independence and enhancing self-confidence and self-reliance amongst the students.
- By educating the girls concerning personal health and ethical issues. Also enabling the girls to develop awareness of the world around them.
- By fostering concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment.
Cycling to School
We advise girls to have completed their cycle proficiency training before they start to cycle to school. Information about free or subsidised cycle training for young people can be found by following this link to the Hammersmith & Fulham website: simon.franklin@lbhf.gov.uk.
Why do we need a Travel Plan?
All of those involved with the Godolphin & Latymer School recognise the importance of the school journey and its impact on the surrounding area, both environmentally and socially. The plan aims to encourage a modal shift on the journey to and from school, promoting more sustainable forms of transport.
The school recognises that the Travel Plan will also help our school students to develop their independence and confidence, exploring their personal responsibility. We hope that the information learnt from the involvement and awareness of the Travel Plan should assist our students in developing their own ethos about the benefits of sustainable travel for their entire lives.
Our commitment to the travel plan
Using the information presented in the report we will seek to encourage good citizenship, consideration of our impact on the local community, and concern for health and the environment on both an individual and institutional basis We will seek to:
- Encourage people associated with the school and its activities to use public transport or walk / cycle to school.
- Minimise our impact on the environment.
- Raise awareness about travel and road safety issues. For students of secondary school age, making your own way to school is a chance to learn ‘skills for life’ becoming independent, self-confident, and able to predict and handle risks with more awareness.
- Encourage health and environmental awareness – for example, students driven to school may not realise that in busy traffic they breathe in more pollution inside the car than they would by walking along the pavement. The more active you are in childhood and teenage years, the more likely you are to be active as an adult, which means less risk of health problems in later life.
- Work with other bodies such as local Councils or the police in order to address issues of concern regarding safe transport and to work together to encourage ways of minimising congestion and environmental disruption to the local community.
- To challenge established travel habits in the context of a large proportion of the student body living within 3 miles of the school (6 out of 7 students).
