Drama is taken once a week in the UIII and LIV for the whole year, and once a week in the UIV for half a year. Lessons are dynamic and fun, and aim to encourage students to develop a range of drama techniques, as well as appreciate the importance of group work and co-operation.
Students have the opportunity in lessons to make, perform and respond to drama. Using a range of resources, including Trestle Theatre Company mask sets, costumes, props, hats, and theatrical lighting and sound, students devise and create performance work from a range of stimuli. They explore different ways to present meaning to an audience, and they discover the important role of theatre in society, from both an historical and contemporary perspective. Students are encouraged to evaluate their own work and the work of others, deepening their critical thinking and extending their spoken repertoire.
In the UIV students begin to explore the work of theatrical practitioners such as Konstantin Stanislavski and Bertolt Brecht, and discover the many different approaches to theatre across history.
In the summer term, the LIV and UIV work in lessons to rehearse and produce a whole-class play, performed to parents in the Bishop Centre at the end of term. This is an opportunity for every single girl to take on an important production role, be it acting, designing or technical crew.
