Many girls taking a year out between school and higher education are working first and then travelling abroad. Travel destinations include Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, China, South America, South East Asia, and the South Pacific. Some girls have arranged voluntary work placements in South America, Sri Lanka and Tonga. Other girls are gaining work experience related to their degree course or career interests, these include an internship with EMI in Canada, a work placement with a criminal lawyer, and working in a care centre for children with special needs.

Some girls are gaining work experience in engineering (via Year in Industry), the recording industry and the legal profession. Work placements abroad include an advertising agency in S Africa, and an internship in clinical research in Canada. Three girls are taking courses history of art and Italian in Florence and Rome.
