Higher education and careers advice and guidance is provided by one full-time member of staff and two members of the teaching staff who have allocated time. The Higher Education and Careers Team work closely with form tutors, the Head of Middle School and the Head of Sixth Form to provide a comprehensive programme of information, advice and guidance to each girl throughout her years at Godolphin and Latymer.
The programme starts in the Upper Fourth year with choice of GCSE subjects. There is an evening meeting giving information about the curriculum, and the careers and higher education implications of subject choices. Girls attend one of the ‘Introduction to the Higher Education and Careers Team’ sessions to familiarise themselves with the resources available; and they or their parents can arrange an appointment to discuss individual subject choices.
In the Autumn Term of the Upper Fifth year the girls attend the Subject Fair which focuses on options in the AS/A Level and IB Diploma pathways, and they take part in the Shadowing Scheme to get a real taste of life in the Sixth Form. Each Upper Fifth girl has an individual interview with a member of the Careers Team to consider Sixth Form choices and possible higher education plans. We also offer the PREVIEW Careers Programme which matches interests and abilities and suggests a number of possible career areas for further investigation.
The guidance programme continues with information sessions and workshops to prepare for higher education applications. For girls choosing the AS/A Level pathway, decisions regarding choice of subjects to continue to A2 level are finalised after another interview in the Lower Sixth year. In the Spring Term of the Lower Sixth there is an information evening about higher education for girls and parents, and the annual Higher Education Forum. The girls will have at least one interview to discuss choice of course and universities. In the Summer Term, after AS public examinations and IB school examinations, the Post-Exam Programme gives the chance to focus on higher education choices and applications, and to attend university Open Days. Individual advice continues throughout the application process in the Upper Sixth. On the IB AS and A-Level results days members of staff are in school for consultation.
Our Careers Room is well stocked with up-to-date information about courses and careers, and contains prospectuses from all universities. It is open to girls at all times during the school day. We organise a biennial Careers Evening for the Middle and Senior School; the last event was November 2009. Girls and their parents had the opportunity to listen to speakers from a wide range of professional areas from Acting to Website Design.
Work Experience
At the end of the Upper Fifth year all girls have the opportunity to undertake a work placement in a career area of their choice (usually for a period of a week), to discover more about the reality of a particular area of work or profession.
In 1993, we introduced a European Work Experience scheme. A small number of Lower Sixth girls spend 10-14 days in a work placement in either Paris or Berlin to gain experience of working in another European city. Both schemes are run jointly with Latymer Upper School.
