Classics Visit to Greece

The Olympian deities were certainly looking down benevolently on the Classics department’s biennial visit to Greece which took place during the October 2009. The group which consisted mainly of UV students who are studying for GCSEs in Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilisation embarked on an action-packed week long tour of the principal sites in mainland Greece. Starting our visit in Athens where we were blessed with clear blue skies and high temperatures we took in the National Archaeological Museum, the ancient Agora, the theatre of Dionysus, the Acropolis and the dazzling new Acropolis Museum. From Athens we headed north up into the rugged mountains ready to consult the oracle of Apollo at Delphi. Unfortunately, an earlier rock fall meant that we were kept back from the temple but the rest of the site and the Sanctuary of Athene close by, met with our approval. Next, crossing over into the Peloponnese we made the long journey to Olympia, with our budding athletes ready to compete in the traditional stade race in the stadium there; the swift-footed Vittoria Warszewski in UVL clinched victory.   We finished our tour in Tolon, which was the ideal base for exploring the sites of Tiryns with its Cyclopean walls, the imposing Mycenae, Epidaurus where the girls performed extracts from Greek tragedy and comedy and the very scenic Nafplion.

Thanks to Mrs Charlotte Blackman and Mr William Ford for accompanying this visit.
