The AS course (Edexcel) comprises two units:

Unit 1 concerns competitive markets: how they work, and why they fail. This unit examines the market mechanism in the context of various markets. It also analyses the causes of market failure and possible policy remedies. For example, policies for dealing with pollution or monopoly abuse.

Unit 2 considers the measures of macroeconomic performance and instruments of economic policy. The unit deals with issues such as inflation, unemployment, economic growth, and international trade. It also deals with the role of government in managing the economy.

The A2 comprises a further two units of assessment:

Unit 3 covers business economics and economic efficiency.  The unit considers the behaviour of firms in different markets, with special reference to the pricing and sales strategies of both large and small companies.

Unit 4 considers the global economy. This unit deals with the experience of developing countries as well as the UK economy in the context of the global economy.
