Group 4 Science Project and Symposium

As part of their IB course all girls are required to undertake the Group 4 Science Project. Each girl is part of a cross-disciplinary team which consists of at least one physicist, one chemist and one biologist. Each team was set the task of designing and creating three clocks (one based loosely in biology, one in chemistry and one in physics). These clocks were then used to time a mystery piece of music, which turned out to be, rather appropriately, “Danger, Danger, High Voltage!” by Electric Six).

The idea behind the project is to get the girls working together in teams across the traditional science-subject boundaries. The girls are expected to remain motivated throughout (and as you can see from the photos they did!), contributing their share, listening to the ideas and views of other members of the team and working collaboratively to overcome any weaknesses and pool their strengths. In fact the scientific outcome of the project is not assessed at all, merely the process by which they get there.

At the symposium on the evening of 17 June, students, parents and teachers gathered to see the fruits of the girls’ labours. Each team had produced a poster outlining their project and a PowerPoint presentation. The evening went very well, and really put across the sense of achievement and fun that the girls experienced during the project. You can get more of a feel for how everything went from the photos, by The Incredibles.
